In this article, weInvisalign continues gaining popularity as a clear alternative to traditional orthodontics because it’s more comfortable and discreet. Instead of using metal brackets and wires, this treatment relies on transparent plastic trays that fit over your teeth to shift them over a designated period.
Because they are removable, there’s no need for any dietary restrictions. However, you must take them out before eating or drinking anything other than water to avoid harming or staining them. You’re not alone if you’re struggling to extract your aligners because of their snug fit. Continue reading to learn 3 tips to withdraw them successfully!

Tip #1: Start in the Back
Many patients tend to grasp the fronts of their teeth when trying to remove their trays, which isn’t always the most effective approach. Although it may seem counterintuitive, you might have better luck starting in the back, instead.
To do so, place your fingertip against the inside of your back molar and pull the aligner away from your teeth. Do the same on the other side of your mouth with a different molar, then slowly work your fingers toward the front of your arch until the tray is freed. You can also try starting at a molar on one side and working your way around your teeth to the other.
Tip #2: Dry Your Mouth Briefly
Did you know that touching the inside of your mouth with your finger is enough to trigger additional saliva production? If your Invisalign is wet with too much spit, you might not be able to grasp it firmly enough to pull it away from your teeth.
To avoid this slippery slope, try to dry your mouth out just before removing your trays. Simply open it for a few seconds to let the moisture dissipate, then reach in to take them out as usual. You may also want to have a clean paper towel or cloth close by to wipe your fingers and keep them dry.
Tip #3: Don’t Consume Anything Too Cold
Invisalign is much less abrasive than standard orthodontics because the smooth plastic doesn’t lacerate the insides of your lips and cheeks like sharp wires and brackets tend to. However, the material is vulnerable to changes in temperature, and consuming anything too cold can harden it and make it more difficult to remove.
You might think it’s better to eat or drink something hot to help remove your trays, but high temperatures can warp the plastic so it no longer fits. It’s best to take them out when your mouth is at its natural temperature.
If you’re still not having any luck after trying these tips, it may be time to contact your dentist to ensure your Invisalign fits correctly!
