Sedation Dentist Baytown

Choose Your Relaxation Level

Gone are the days when people who were anxious or fearful of going to the dentist simply ignored their dental care. This often allowed minor dental problems to become major issues that require immediate and expensive care, which usually leads to even more dental anxiety, creating a cycle that is ultimately detrimental to someone’s oral and overall health.

At Aesthetic Family Dentistry, we can provide three different levels of sedation dentistry in Baytown to help our nervous patients relax and experience pain-free dental procedures. Whether you need just a little help to feel comfortable in the chair or something more substantial, you can rely on our experienced and understanding team to be there with a sympathetic ear and a solution at the ready.

In many cases, it only takes one stress-free appointment using sedation to help a person overcome their dental fears, and we can do the same for you with the techniques below.

IV Sedation (“First Class”)

This is the highest level of sedation. It involves IV sedation, and with the anesthesiologist, you can choose a moderate to deep level. With the moderate level, you will remain aware and be capable of answering questions, but you will have limited memory of the procedure and experience no pain or nervousness. With very deep sedation, you may relax completely and fall asleep.

Oral Conscious Sedation (“Business Class”)

Also called oral conscious sedation, you will take oral medication before the visit. You will be completely relaxed yet awake, although you may not remember all the details of the procedure and you may actually fall asleep in the chair.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (“Coach Sedation”)

Nitrous oxide may be the mildest form of dental sedation, but it’s still incredibly effective. In fact, it’s been used for decades to help both children and adults alike alleviate anxiety, stress, and worry. If you’re wondering why this is the first time you’re hearing about it, it’s likely because you’ve heard it referred to by its nickname: laughing gas. If you are interested in learning more about it, read on or give us a call.

Who is a Good Candidate for Nitrous Oxide?

Dental nitrous oxide in Baytown is typically recommended for patients who:

· Need extensive dental care, like multiple tooth extractions

· Experience head/neck/jaw pain in the treatment chair

· Have a sensitive gag reflex

· Are scared of needles

· Struggle with dental-related anxiety

Although nitrous oxide is suitable for a wide range of patients, it’s not recommended for those who are pregnant, allergic, or have a breathing condition, like asthma.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Nitrous oxide gas is administered through a nasal mask, which will be positioned comfortably in place after you settle into the treatment chair. We’ll ask you to breathe in through your nose and, after a few minutes, you’ll feel the effects set in. Patients often describe it as a wave of relaxation that causes them to feel light, happy, and even euphoric.

Since you won’t be asleep, you can easily respond to the verbal cues we give you and ask any questions you have. We can even adjust the flow of nitrous oxide as needed to ensure you maintain optimal comfort and relaxation during your time in the treatment chair.

Aftercare for Nitrous Oxide

If you are choosing IV or oral sedation, you will need assistance with driving after the appointment, as the effects of these sedatives may last until the next day. With nitrous oxide, that’s not the case. In fact, the effects dissipate almost as quickly as they come on. So, you’ll be able to resume your usual routine following your visit! All we ask is that you keep in mind any aftercare instructions we provided pertaining to the treatment you received, like not chewing on a certain side of your mouth for the next 24 hours.
